Starcraft Brood War Install On Linux For Fun While Waiting For Starcraft 2

Stephen Blum

So I've been waiting for SC2 for what seems to be half a decade. I'm excited and craving StarCraft game play so I go to figure out a way to once again to fill my need to play the best strategy game of all time. I go strait to Blizzard's Web Store and find it available for download yay! I boot up VirtualBox with Guest Additions for sound and video card support. Whip out the wallet and grab the credit card and type in the many digits for StarCraft plus Brood Wars pack. Success! They took my money and I press download. Here's my beef. The download is SLOOOOOOW. I have a 50mbit connection and frequently see 3MB/s sustained downloads. Blizzard download is limited to about 256kb/s even though I paid for it. Lame.

Upset with the mandatory 4 hour wait I hit the search button for 'StarCraft Broodwar Torrents'. After loading four torrent links I found a great set of connections and my download is now reasonable at 2500kb/s. This shoots way past the Blizzard download I paid for with time to spare. I have the game up and running and now I'm here typing about this experience and the download from Blizzard is STILL transferring. Lame.

I'm going to go play StarCraft now with Brood War expansion. The story ends with me being happy, playing the greatest strategy game. Blizzard, you need to fix your download limiter cuz there are lots of people now with mega net connections these days. It's a simple binary file even, just stick that puppy on a CDN man.
